Prof. Sarat Thikkurissy

Biography

Dr. S.Thikkurissy is Professor and The Robert Creedon Endowed Chair of Dentistry at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital. He also has a dual appointment in the Division of Bone Marrow Transplantation and Immune Deficiency. Thikkurissy obtained his D.D.S. from New York University. He completed the program in Advanced Education in General Dentistry (AEGD-1) at Wright Patterson Air Force Base and was active duty in the U.S. Air Force for eight years: including serving as chief of pediatric dentistry at Ramstein AFB in Germany. Thikkurissy obtained his certificate in pediatric dentistry/master’s degree from The Ohio State University. He also has a master’s in literature from Southern New Hampshire University. Thikkurissy is a diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry and Chair of the AAPD Committee on Sedation and Anesthesia, and AAPD representative on the ADA Committee on Dental Education and Licensure group on Sedation. Additionally, he has served on the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry Examination committee. In 2017 he was named the AAPD Pediatric Dentist of the Year award, and in 2019 was named the Aubrey Rose Foundation ‘Above and Beyond Doctor’ for his work with special needs populations. He has lectured nationally in and internationally, and has published in the areas of; morbidities, quality of life and pain management in children.

Title:

Development of The Pediatric Airway

Description:

Development of the Pediatric Airway impacts not only global growth but specifically pharmacologic management of dental disease. Procedural Sedation and general anesthesia outcomes may be impacted by airway development. This talk will discuss danger signs of airway disease, sleep disordered breathing and impact on use of sedative medications.

Attendees will be able to

  1. Describe critical steps in pediatric airway growth
  2. Relate complications of the pediatric airway to dental disease
  3. Understand the concept of respiratory age in risk assessment

Lecture 2

Title:

Oral Health in the Immunocompromised Patient

Description:

Patients who are immunocompromised have specific oral findings and sequelae. This talk will discuss how to assess health of oral tissues, potential differential diagnoses, and potential strategies for improving oral health during episodes of compromise

 

Attendees will be able to :

  1. Discuss parameters that determine immune compromise
  2. Explain how the oral microbiome and bacterial colonies are impacted by immune status
  3. Relate strategies that will allow families to maintain oral health in the face of immune compromise.
