Dr. Elise Sarvas

Biography

Elise Sarvas, DDS, MSD, MPH is a board-certified pediatric dentist who provides hospital-based care at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, USA. She completed her Doctor of Dental Surgery at the Adams School of Dentistry at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She completed her specialty training in pediatric dentistry and Masters in Dentistry and Masters in Public Health at the University of Washington in Seattle. After teaching full-time for almost seven years Dr. Sarvas became the first pediatric dentist on staff at Mayo Clinic. She specializes in caring for the oral health needs of infants, children, and adolescents with complex medical conditions in a hospital setting.

Lecture 1

Title:

Oral health of children and youth with developmental disabilities

Description:

Oral health is an essential component of overall health for all individuals. The oral
health of children and youth with developmental disabilities involves unique characteristics of which dental clinicians can be aware. Risk for oral disease in CYDD is multifactorial and includes underlying medical conditions, medications, and ability to participate in preventive oral health care and treatment, and lack of access to providers is common for this population. The objectives of this lecture will be to:
– Examine the unique caries risk factors and periodontal risk factors in this population.
– Recognize aspects of a child with developmental disabilities’ condition that may alter their oral health care, whether that is inherent to the condition itself or treatment of the condition.
– Discuss the special considerations for dental treatment rendered under sedation or general anesthesia that children and youth with developmental disabilities may need.
– Explore how dentists can work with their medical colleagues to ensure that barriers to accessing oral health can in their community can be addressed.

Lecture 2

Title:

Hospital-based pediatric dentistry

Description:

Caring for the oral health needs of some individuals with special health care needs may involve or even require a hospital setting. This case series will discuss some of the hospital based pediatric dental care rendered at Mayo Clinic. It will also discuss aspects of starting up a hospital-based practice. The objectives of this lecture will be to:
– Describe populations who would benefit from hospital-based oral health care
– Examine different scenarios using a case-based methodology
– Propose how to start and organize a hospital-based clinic
