Lecture

Title:

“Dental Management of Children with Cancer”

Description:

Each year approximately 400,000 children develop cancer across the world. The Paediatric Dentist has an important role in ensuring these children are dentally fit prior to commencing treatment, and also in providing emergency care for children during acute oncology treatment, as many cancers and most treatment render children immunocompromised and more susceptible to infection from a dental source.
This lecture will describe the most common childhood cancers, diagnosis and treatment. Important rationale for providing dental care for these children, including both routine, and emergency care, will also be discussed. The indications for special precautions, such as antibiotic prophylaxis and blood transfusion, will also be covered with reference to important guidelines from the Royal College of Surgeons England and the American Association of Paediatric Dentistry.
